March 2010 Town Newsletter

Stimulus Funding Award: Manila has just been notified that we have been awarded a funding package from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  The project being funded includes the one million-three hundred thousand gallon tank, 870 new radio read meters, 350 new meter pits, fire hydrants, and over five miles of new main line infrastructure.  This total project funding is $3,269,000 of which $2,413,000 is granted making the project’s grant portion at 74%.  The remainder is 40 year loan at 2.5%.  This combined with the funding for the new well has Manila receiving about $5,500,000 in funding since early in 2009.  The focus is completion of our water system for the long term.

Water Rate adjustment: As a requirement for being able to qualify for, accept, and pay for the stimulus and well drilling funding loan portions, Manila Water has raised the across the board water rate for all users of the system.   Beginning with the April 2010 billing, all users will pay an increase of $5.00 for a base gallons amount of 10,000.  The overage will increase to $2.25 per thousand gallons, and late fees will be $5.00.  This increase will ensure the ability for Manila to meet the debt service loan payments, increased cost of operations, comply with State mandates for conservation practices, and provide that all users of the water share the fiscal burden.

Trash burning: The Manila Fire Department reminds our citizens that the burning of garbage and trash at home is against the State laws.  It is contrary to the mandates of the Division of Environmental Quality.  A landfill is available for deposits and Manila picks up curbside waste.

Manila Fire: Volunteer firefighters are needed by the department.  Here is an opportunity to serve the citizens of this valley by being ready to protect life and property from fire.  Applicants should contact Town Hall at 435-784-3143.  The time required is minimal but the reward is great.
